A DIFFERENT APPROACH

My Personal Journey

Alan Campbell Bates

Rapid Change & Subconscious Performance Coach

Hello, I'm Alan.

I help professionals, entrepreneurs and people who appear to have it all together on the outside, but privately struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, overwhelm or the feeling that they're somehow not good enough.

People who are capable, hardworking and successful in many areas of life, yet still find themselves overthinking decisions, questioning their abilities, procrastinating or repeating patterns they know aren't helping them.

If any of that sounds familiar, I understand more than you might realise.

Because for much of my life, I was that person.

I've come to understand that changing how we feel, behave and perform isn't always about working harder, finding more motivation or building greater willpower.

Sometimes, it's about questioning the beliefs we've been carrying about ourselves for years, often without even realising they're there.

And the encouraging thing is, those beliefs don't have to define the rest of your life.

My Personal Journey

For much of my life, I lived with anxiety, depression and chronic fatigue.

I kept going, as most of us do. I worked hard, pushed through the difficult days and tried to make the best of things. To anyone looking in, I probably seemed to be managing perfectly well.

But inside, it was a different story.

I was exhausted, not simply from the demands of life, but from the constant battle in my own mind.

Growing up, I'd heard things that no child should have to believe about themselves.

"You're an idiot."

"You're stupid."

"You'll never amount to anything."

"There's nothing special about you."

Over time, those words stopped being things other people had said to me. They became beliefs I held about myself.

I carried those beliefs into adulthood without questioning them. I simply assumed they were true.

And they influenced far more of my life than I realised.

Whenever things started to go well, I would somehow find a way to undermine my own progress. I'd question my decisions, doubt my abilities, or pull back just as an opportunity presented itself.

I wanted to succeed, but something always held me back.

Looking back, I can see how much energy I spent trying to prove myself while believing I wasn't good enough.

It's an exhausting way to live.

By the time I reached 55, I'd had enough. Years of struggling with myself had taken their toll, leaving me physically and emotionally drained.

Then something happened that changed the direction of my life.

Following a skiing accident, while awaiting an operation, I collapsed and experienced what I can only describe as a near-death experience, followed by another in hospital.

It's hard to put into words, but from that moment on, something profound shifted in how I saw the world and my place in it.

For the first time, I began to realise that so much of what I'd believed about myself wasn't actually mine.

Those beliefs had come from other people, from their opinions, experiences, fears and understanding of the world. Many had been formed long before I was old enough to question them.

Yet I'd spent decades letting them shape who I thought I was and what I believed was possible.

That realisation changed everything. I didn't have to keep living by a story I'd inherited, because I knew at my core that it was no longer me.

I wasn't who I'd been told I was.

And I didn't have to spend the rest of my life trying to prove otherwise.

For the first time, I felt a sense of freedom I hadn't known before.

That experience began a journey of discovery that continues to this day. I wanted to understand how our minds work, why we become trapped in certain patterns, and, most importantly, how we can change them.

It eventually led me to the work I do today.

From Personal Transformation to Helping Others

My own experience sparked a fascination with the relationship between our beliefs, our thinking, and how we experience life.

I trained in Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) with Marisa Peer, studied hypnotherapy, NLP and coaching with Ali Campbell, and explored the work of Peter Crone, whose insights into identity, conditioning and human behaviour have profoundly shaped my approach.

Along the way, I've also integrated principles from cognitive-behavioural approaches, psychotherapy, neuroscience and the work of Syd Banks and the Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought.

I've discovered that no single methodology has all the answers.

Different people need different approaches, and meaningful change isn't always achieved by adhering to a rigid process.

That's why I've combined the most valuable elements of my training and experience into a more flexible, personalised approach to working.

Today, I describe myself as a Rapid Change and Subconscious Performance Coach.

It's a description that reflects what I do: helping people understand and change the beliefs, mental habits and automatic responses that may be preventing them from living and performing as they'd like.

For some, it means overcoming anxiety or imposter syndrome.

For others, it's letting go of perfectionism, procrastination, self-sabotage, or the relentless pressure to achieve.

For many, it's something much simpler.

They want to feel comfortable being themselves once more.

My Approach: Change the Beliefs, Change the Experience

One thing I've learned, both personally and professionally, is that we can spend an enormous amount of time trying to change our circumstances without ever questioning the beliefs that shape how we experience them.

You can have a successful career, a thriving business and a good life on paper, yet still feel anxious, overwhelmed or convinced that you're somehow falling short.

You might know intellectually that you're capable, yet still hesitate when an opportunity arises.

You might recognise that perfectionism is exhausting, yet find yourself unable to let go of it.

Or perhaps you've spent years trying to become more confident, without understanding why the same doubts keep returning.

This is where my work begins.

Rather than focusing solely on changing behaviour, we explore the beliefs, interpretations and automatic patterns that may be influencing it.

My approach combines subconscious work with practical coaching, helping you develop a different relationship with your thinking and create changes that carry over into everyday life.

Where Rapid Transformational Therapy Fits In

Rapid Transformational Therapy is an important part of my work.

RTT brings together hypnotherapy and therapeutic techniques to help explore the beliefs and associations that may be contributing to unwanted emotional and behavioural patterns.

Hypnosis can provide a focused, relaxed state in which we can explore these patterns and introduce more helpful perspectives.

But I don't believe meaningful change requires reliving painful experiences or revisiting every detail of your past.

Where appropriate, I use a content-free approach to hypnotherapy, allowing us to work directly with the patterns and responses themselves without requiring you to disclose or revisit distressing memories.

I combine this with coaching, reflective enquiry and practical strategies to help you apply new insights to your daily life.

The aim isn't merely to help you feel better during a session.

It's to help you think, respond and live differently.

Although profound insights can sometimes arise quickly, I believe lasting progress comes from combining those insights with understanding, reinforcement and real-world change.

Performance Isn't About Pushing Harder

When people hear the word performance, they often think of achieving more, working harder or constantly striving for the next level.

That's not how I see it.

For me, genuine performance is about bringing the best of yourself to whatever matters most, without constantly fighting your own mind.

It's having the confidence to make decisions without endlessly second-guessing yourself.

It's about being able to switch off at the end of the day without feeling guilty.

It's recognising your own value without needing constant approval.

It's about pursuing your ambitions without sacrificing your wellbeing, relationships or enjoyment of life.

And sometimes it's simply waking up in the morning, feeling comfortable with who you are.

You don't have to exhaust yourself to succeed. And you don't have to keep proving you're good enough.

Who I Work With

I work primarily with professionals, business owners, entrepreneurs, consultants, and coaches ready to move beyond limiting thought and behaviour patterns.

Many are outwardly successful but privately struggling with:

Anxiety, stress and persistent overthinking

Imposter syndrome and self-doubt

Perfectionism and fear of failure

Procrastination and self-sabotage

Overwhelm and difficulty switching off

Confidence, motivation and a loss of direction

Some come to me because a particular issue has held them back for years.

Others have reached a point in life where they're questioning what success really means to them.

Whatever brings you here, my role isn't to tell you who you should become.

It's to help you recognise what's been getting in the way of being yourself.

I work with clients internationally through private online sessions, as well as in person at my practice in Brighton.

A Final Thought

If there's one thing my journey has taught me, it's this:

You are not obliged to spend the rest of your life living by beliefs you acquired years ago.

Just because you've always thought a certain way doesn't mean you always will.

Just because you've struggled with something for years doesn't mean it has to define your future.

Just because you've achieved success by pushing yourself relentlessly doesn't mean that's the only way forward.

Change begins when we start questioning what we've always believed to be true.

Sometimes, that one shift in understanding can open the door to possibilities we hadn't imagined before.

That's what I love about my work.

Helping people discover that there's another way to experience themselves, their work and their lives, and that they're capable of far more than their old beliefs have led them to believe.
